Old Porsche prices are crazy

Yeah that person is way off base but I did just have a guy buy one for $19K that I couldn't believe he paid that much for.:wtf. Decent examples are easily getting $10k right now.

You sound a little jaded. I'm sorry things aren't going so well for you. Since I've been in the Porsche specific industry for over 25 years I think I have a little different perspective than you. IMHO early Porsche cars are some of the best cars ever produced and they're finally getting the respect they deserve. Build quality, performance, reliability, they've got it all. They're just not as sexy as their contemporaries. I'd put an early 70s Porsche up against an early 70s Ferrari or Jaguar any day for about 1/10 of the cost both to buy and operate.

There is a reason Porsche dominated endurance racing during that era and their production cars got a lot of trickle down racing DNA. For years, Porsche guys quietly drove their cars 1000s of miles per year while Italian and British cars were pampered garage queens. Sure I've acquired several Porsceh cars over the years and some of them are worth quite a lot more than when I got them but I don't care. I drive em all, hard, and they rarely let me down but when they do, I can still get parts for them very easily. Can't say that about most cars from that era.

Your post does nothing to invalidate my premise. You just like Porsche's, so what? And you know nothing about me or my life, just assuming some shit because I was making a point about rich people and how they spend their money. I don't really care about you or your cars, dude.

Dang dude, why the aggro. FWIW, old Porsche's aren't "rich people's cars". The prices might be "crazy" but not compared to a new bro-dozer IMHO.

Rich people drive new Lambos or maybe an old Yenko Camaro completely frame-off restored. Not some commoner's 911 that anyone could buy off Craigslist etc.

The very first link was the 33,9k 914 that is not posted anymore. My guess is CL got the best of him with that price lol. That high priced 73 had the ugly safety bumpers and hubcaps too vs this one ( cleaner front and rear and the cool wheels )

This one has been posted for about 2 months now. Little more realistic price and yet here it is still. Look at all the other cars in the background!

Only 53%?

My stepfathers 74 911 had 400,000 miles on it when he finally got rid of it. He did end of swapping out the 2.7 sport-o-matic for a 3.0 and 5spd towards the end of his ownership. Sold that pin straight car in the early 90s for 5-6k.

Even then, he sold low.

I would commit minor felonies for a smog exempt 911

Seems to me that a narrow band of enthusiasts has someone managed to convince themselves that these cars are "classic" and is pricing accordingly.

Not really narrow at all. The Porsche fanatic base is huge and the older cars are in very high demand now, particularly restored. Those prices don't look far off at all, but it all depends on the car. I agree the prices of some of them are nuts to me, but that's where the market is and it's pretty liquid on the good cars.

If you want to see some amazing restored/improved old Porsche's check out Singer. Unreal cars with unreal prices.

Never really liked VW's. My buddied dad had a pretty legit 70's 911 RS that he sold for about 75k though. Made like 355whp all motor, I guess that's pretty good for a little light tin can with a flat 6.

A few months ago I thought I'd look into 964s. Last I checked, they were kinda the black sheep of 911s, pricing-wise. Whew, apparently that's not the case any more, and 996s are looking like a better bargain now.

A nice clean 996TT can be had for around 50 now. That's CHEAP.

I always loved the idea of a non sunroof 911sc, super cool cars. Just sold a badge to a guy with a crusty 912, the air cooled p cars are worth some money. Wish my 1978 280slc mercedes was worth money. Only issue with the p cars is parts prices, god forbid you need engine work. My car can keep up with the Porsche on the open road but not in the twisties, almost went off the road twice trying.

I sold my '76 Carrera 3.0 grey market smog exempt CARB stickered car for $10K six (?) years ago. I had it for sale for quite a while. It was very clean. Go figure.

I did really not like the way it drove that much. The front was quite light and got very darty over 120 mph. I like my 914 better.

Edit: it was ten years ago, before the housing crash. http://www.bayarearidersforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=118228&highlight=Carrera

I want a 964 RS America bad. But they are getting to be like unicorns, and priced accordingly.

the 74-76 are the least loved air cooled cars and demand the least money- but even they are rising

In the range of $60k? cause that RSR I posted is a '70 but the engine in it is not... :rolleyes ;)

Dmitriy, that sure is a pretty car. I love the RS and RSR. Isn't it supposed to have a duck tail tho?

I had a chance to re-enact this article from 1989 about a week ago when I had an old professor's 1988 930 for the day, in guards red matching my 1988.5 951 M030. The 930 is a 6 figure car now, and the 951 is still a 4 figure car (at least in the condition mine is in). I have to say, I prefer the 951 in nearly every way. Driving the 930 was pretty cool given the rarity and the admiring looks from folks at the gas station and the track, but if I didn't know the price tag, I'd take the 951 every time.

Still some deals to be had out there. Just not on the things that everyone thinks they want right now. That said, I don't see 911 prices ever dropping that much...

Yeah, they are. After having one I'd probably lean toward a regular C2 instead. I liked the simplicity but in reality the suspension, manual steering and no AC made it tougher to use. Mine had two of only four options you could get - LSD and radio. Good for racers.

951s are totally underappreciated. Durable drive trains, all day comfortable, ~500 mile range and easier to drive fast than 911s. Unadulterated ones are hard to find, though.

951 is a very good car. I use mine as a DD. Right now the drivetrain is mostly stock but I've got a 3.0 bottom end that I'm going to marry to another head and finally have some torque.

500 mile range? I'm lucky to get 300 in mine. Maybe for a normally aspirated one but the turbo? I've got a bit of a lead foot sure but I doubt I could squeeze nearly 40% more efficiency out of it.
