500 mile range? I'm lucky to get 300 in mine. Maybe for a normally aspirated one but the turbo? I've got a bit of a lead foot sure but I doubt I could squeeze nearly 40% more efficiency out of it.

Maybe slight hyperbole. I commuted SF to Elk Grove for 2.5 years in an '89 Turbo - 116 miles each way. I'd fill up every 2 days, ~460 miles, and never hit reserve - 21 gal tank IIRC. Wish I still had that car.

I had my dad in town this weekend and rented a '06 911 convertible (proper manual) for a day. Drove up hwy 1 to hog island. I know modern 911s are pretty normal in the bay area, but that was a wonderful experience. I loved driving that car. I've always loved the 911, but I now get what all the fuss is about.

This is the site I rented it from - peer to peer car rentals.

I'm going for the V8 supercharged jaguar F type next time. There's a guy in San Jose that rents his '64 corvette.

People allow their personal cars to be entered into a rental pool? Weird

Bookmarked.

But, some of the prices being asked for are hilarious. I looked up Detroit, and there's dudes who want $300-400 a day for their stupid Camaro or Grand Cherokee SRT :rofl

Yeah that's high. Most highly desirable cars are $100-250 per day. The 911 I rented was $100 per day. Interior was well worn and it showed its age but still performed well. But some people will rent out their 2016 Porsches and M3s. Maybe those are lease cars, idk.

What would a set of tires for a 911 cost?
No way in the world would I hand over keys of a 911 I owned to a stranger for a day for only $133.
Would insurance even cover an accident.

Exactly .. those 911 aren't worth a whole lot compared to other porsches but maintenance and perishable are still pricey. Wonder what happens if I rent that car a day for my next track day :laughing

From the Turo webpage, for the vehicle owner:

"You’re protected with $1 million in liability insurance, and your car is covered against theft and physical damage."

However, you only earn 65% of the rental fee if you opt for the 'Premium' insurance package.

I wouldn't put something high value on there, but I have a '16 Mustang 6M that I'm barely putting 100 miles per week on right now. Wouldn't miss it for a few days if I'm getting paid $60/day.

I wouldn't do it, but I'm happy to rent from people that will. I was trying to figure out the motivation of the guy I rented from. He has an '05 and '06 911 and a boxster. The 911s are probably worth about $30-35k each. If he's trying to grow a fleet of Porsches for rental, doesn't seem like this model will offset the costs of the cars and the maintenance. There are a few other guys in the bay area that have fleets of 5-10 performance/luxury cars.

It was a bit strange though. I never met the guy, just communicated through the app. He left the car unlocked with the key inside and I left the key in the trunk when I dropped it off.

I have a car that I don't drive much that would be a good candidate for this service, but I would be way too worried about my clutch. Most people have no idea how to match revs. I read the fine print on their website about "normal wear and tear"- any ding/scratch less than 3" is considered normal wear tear. So the renter can rash all your wheels, get a few door dings, and you are completely SOL. No thanks, I'll just leave my car on the trickle charger...

Maybe some people aren't attached to herr overpriced Volkswagen? They're just cars.

Edit: Had to fix that.

I've been wondering about that guy on Turo too. I think he just buys older cars for cash, and rents them out. also, a 996 911 Carrera is only about 15K.
