The Official 2015/2016 NFL Thread

I cant believe the Giants signed LT Newhouse. The dude is HORRIBLE.

I think you are underestimating how desperate our O-Line situation is. The Gold Standard O-Line from the '07 Superbowl is long gone. I am amazed Eli was able to put up a 92.3 or whatever it was he did last year with a rotating line of receivers, a busted running game and no O-line. I suspect we will draft anothe rlineman in the first or second round. NYG never deviates from tthe, "Best Player Available," strategy, but as soon as the best player is an O-Lineman, figure we will sign the guy, possibly twice this draft.

willis retired

i just literally jumped off the 49ers bandwagon xD

that guy was the 9er D

bottom of the division FOR SURE now

naw tbh imma go pickup a willis jersey now

I don't know why you keep saying that. His contract is ridiculously team friendly.

True I'm not aware of how good or bad the Giants Oline was. I do know that Newhouse will do absolutely nothing to make it better. He was so bad when he had to start after Andre Smith had a season ending injury, that the Bengals brought in Eric Winston, who hadnt played a single game all year and had been sitting on his couch. He was still a massive upgrade over Newhouse. So much that they just signed him to a two year deal. Hopefully for the Giants they cut Newhouse in preseason.

You are out of your mind, NO ONE, NOT ANYONE will take Kaepernick with his current contract.[/QUOTE

Never mind his contract, no one will take Kaepernick based on his on field performance. Except for maybe Tampa Bay or Cleveland. Man I would love it if Cleveland traded for him.

Sure, if you think you are investing in a starter, but my point is, he is a SERIOUS question mark right now. Nobody wants to pay serious starting money for a reclamation project, even one with a big potential upside like dude. I mean, it is nice they can knife him at the drop of a hat, but what is his cap hit, like 15 million this season? That seems like an AWFUL lot. You could buy RGIII (they ARE shopping him) from the Redskins for about HALF that and his contract is up after next season so you have even more freedom to let him prove it for a year.

Nah, he has shown a lot of talent and struggled a lot in a bad year of stupid politics. He may still be salvageable, but he is a huge risk at 15-16 mill and rising.

I don't know how much we paid him, but we are kind of rebuilding. He might just be a depth guy, but our O-Line is pretty much being drawn up from scratch. So far our best talent on the line might be a second year Center that did OK last year and a guy from the CFL we signed that signed as a center we might try to move over a spot or two. Talk about question marks...

Foles + picks to StL for Bradford...wuh? If Kelly's going for Mariota in the draft, trading away draft picks seems like an odd way to do it.

what if the NYG swoop in and trade for the NYJ draft pick and get Mariota? sit him on the bench for 2 years or until Eli gets crushed too many times from the porous o-line, and meanwhile Kelly is fired for ruining the team trying to get nothing but Oregon players. I would lol

That Foles to St Louis trade is blowing everybodies mind. Most the buzz around the industry right now is that while SF is in freefall due to a disruption in leadership, Kelly appears to be actively trying to destroy the Eagles.

Most likely won't be the case by end of day today.

The way I understand it is that his salary cap hits when/if he's still with the team on 4/1 of each new year. If he's not on the team then his money isn't guaranteed and doesn't count against the cap. Is my understanding incorrect?

Yeah, and his salary decreases every year that he doesn't make the super bowl or the all pro team.

It's massively team friendly. if he performs and he's awesome, he's paid for it -- if not, his pay drops and/or he can be released with basically zero penalty.

Torrey Smith's deal is extremely similar. $8M signing bonus, only $750K salary guaranteed this season, the rest of his contract is guaranteed for injury only -- they can cut him before April 1 every year and only pay him his signing bonus.

Paraag Marathe is a contract/salary cap wizard.

I'd like to hear what Eldy has to say. He seems to know so much about salary structure and the NFL in general.

Yeah, that's a tricky road to navigate though. I realize it's a business, but if players throughout the league start to think a particular team sees them as only replaceable cogs no one will want to play for that team. I realize it makes sense to have contracts based solely on performance with a safety net for injury. Players may see it differently.

Players benefit by having larger signing bonuses. That's money they are going to be paid no matter what, over the length of the deal. By giving Smith an 8M signing bonus, they're committing to pay him that over the length of the deal whether he is on the team or not.

And if he gets injured he still gets paid his full base salary each year he's signed with the team. I understand the incentives. The part I wonder about is how players will perceive deals that are weighted toward their performance. If all the teams in the league don't follow suit there is the possibility that players will perceive these types of contracts as slighting them in some way. If that happens players may decide to take opportunities with other teams rather than sign with the 9ers.

I'll just add this last bit. If a player's salary is tied closely to his performance but his performance can be influenced by how much a coach decides to play him or give him the ball isn't this a loophole the team can exploit? If I were a player this would weigh heavily in my decision to sign a contract. I realize Kap's contract is based on team and individual performance. But this type of pay-for-play structure could get out of hand.

Until the players union changes it, that will continue to be a thing. If the players thought it was a slight, they wouldn't sign. giving out larger signing bonuses still means the guy will get paid.

It's the nature of non-guaranteed contracts.

I'm not suggesting the players will make a concerted effort to change things. I'm suggesting they will perceive it as a slight and choose a different team even if the real money offered by both is close to the same.

^^^I know this is just devastating news for ya, Eldo.

:teeth I have to say, I hope high hopes for a terrific era of broken rebuilding in the City of Brotherly Loathe.

Essentially, yes, but my point is that no one is going to pay that much for a guy that is a question mark after 4/1. For $15 mill you get Raperburger, Phillip Rivers, Eli Manning guys that are proven top 10 dudes. For a few million more you get Peyton. Hell, Brady is a few million less than what Kaep will cost next year, but he is not playing for money now, just legacy. The point is that when you could buy RGIII or Blake Bortles for like HALF of what Kaep costs, why the fuck would you invest in a year of Kaep to find out if he is worth keeping around at that price? You just buy a cheaper project QB or you draft and hope for the best. That is the problem with the deal, right now, Kaep is a project QB at Franchise QB prices. That makes him seriously hands off for a trade.

I know Mike keeps talking about how team friendly the contract is, but that is only for a team that has made a commitment to him as a Franchise guy. ANy other team would only buy him with a, "let him play for a year and see ho whe does," mentality and the cost to do that for him is like 6-7 mill over what other guys like that are going for. No other team in their right mind would commit to a franchise guy with a big question mark over his head at that price when they could buy Mark Sanchez for like 1/3 and see how that works out, but then again, the Eagles did just trade Nick Foles and a First rounder for Sam Bradford :wtf.
