But isn't the mantra of many a'board "if you don't like the post, don't read it/post?"
Sure, he may sound like he's on his high horse, but if he, or any preacher man is able to make a rider more safe and realize that certain actions do endanger not only him/herself but others, isn't that worth it?
You can counter argue that a person's life is their own. But being a motorist in public, you also have to take other motorists into consideration.
Isn't it the same as "anyone can start on a hayabusa, just be careful." but, on the opposite end of the spectrum?
+1, he says that crap way nicer than I do.budbandit said:That is a good question. It turns out that there are actually some pretty tender and sensitive egos in the motorcycle world and that with a little bit of thought it is easy to completely enrage a certain type of person, usually young, usually aggressive, perhaps type A male who despite (or perhaps because of) a lack of experience with the world has a mighty fine opinion of himself and is quick to anger and offense at any suggestion that there might be another way to go about things. Part of the reason I am able to rile up such folks so readily is that I was one myself not so many years ago.
Lots of guys in their late teens/early twenties want to think that they are the shit and that they have all the answers and are particularly riled by folks doing things like telling them that they are completely fucked, especially if someone comes out and tells them that they are completely fucked instead of couching it in coddling, ego preserving language.
A lot of the controversy and provocation is intentional. I have noted that quietly and intelligently spoken points or nuggets of wisdom, well written and without any fucktards or asshats or other colorful and offensives turns of phrase, often dissappear without a ripple, much in a way that mainstream culture tends to ignore PBS programming. However, the same point with some asshats, fucktard squids and perhaps some blingfag posers with R6s hung in the trees like Christmas ornaments tends to get more attention and exposure. I take the calculated risk that the negativity associated with such an approach, which is usually coming from the subset least likely to listen to me or anyone else anyways, is offset by the positives of wider exposure of a potentially useful idea or thought that some might benefit from and that others who already know it hopefully are amused by.
One thing that is funny though, although I never claim to be anything other than a fat old guy of middling skill at best with little more than a bit of experience and a lot of opinions there are plenty of folks willing to accuse me of all sorts of things from God Complex on up. Funny how people get weird ideas and notions.
Long and short of it is that I love riding and I enjoy writing about it and it upsets me greatly to see folks hurting themselves up in the hills. Few things suck the joy out of a nice post work escape to the hills than to come across a meatwagon loading up another rider or having to tend to a wounded guy yourself, not to mention the joy of having some dickhead go wide into your lane at 100+ or the even less joyful experience of being taken out by a fellow rider. So much of the carnage could be avoided completely with just a little bit more common sense.
I hope everyone gets out and has some good times on the bike this weekend and I also hope that everyone gets to avoid meeting The Man in any professional mode. Ride safe, have fun, don't get caught.

You might be pleasantly surprised.
