Modern Day Uzi

THE COMPACT, AMBIDEXTROUS, HK MP7
The H&K MP7 and the 4.6 x 30mm family of high performance ammunition were developed to provide penetration and lethality approaching that of an assault rifle in a package small, portable enough to be carried like a handgun. Adopted by the German special operations unit KSK (Kommando Spezialkräfte) in 2002, the MP7 is now available to military and law enforcement organizations.

Found out some bad news yesterday, I don't know how it slipped by me... but:

Starting in 2006, in addition to the drop-tests no pistols may be sold in California without a "loaded chamber indicator".

Starting in 2007, no pistols may be sold in California without the magazine disconnect (a la Browning HP).

What that means is essentially the end of 1911s, Glocks, Berettas, SIGs, H&Ks etc. in California. I can overlook the LCI, as it usually does not affect the function of a pistol, but I refuse to buy a gun with a mag-disconnect. Maybe some of those manufacturers will build/modify pistols to meet the requirements, but I suspect they'd be more than likely to tell the whole of Cali to go fuck ourselves. And even if Kimber/Springfield/Colt bother to build a 1911 with a mag-disconnect, I wouldn't buy it.

I guess I better kick my plans to move to NV in high gear.

It's a little do-dad that prevents the gun from firing if there is not a magazine inserted in the magazine well.

It's supposed to keep an idiot from shooting himself when they think that a gun is "empty" because it doesn't have a magazine.

Ok, sounds like they are trying to idiot proof guns.....:rolleyes

But what is the big deal? Doesn't sound like it affects the operation of the gun. Or is it because it adds complexity?

It's a mechanism that won't allow the trigger to be pulled or the firing pin to come forward if there is a magazine in the pistol. Basically it renders the pistol useless if you're in the middle of a mag change, or if your magazine isn't seated properly. The side effect is a heavy/unstable trigger pull and also makes dry-firing impossible or a pain-in-the-ass. There's a reason why manufacturers don't use it, and why most people haven't heard of it.

It does affect the operation (see above). Those of us who love 1911s for the smooth trigger pull will no longer have that advantage.

Mall Ninja Time: Two bad guys break into your house, you manage to fire a few shots at them as you retreat to defend your loved ones. You make your stand in your bedroom, decide to top off your handgun, and while you're fumbling in the dark with your magazines bad guy breaks down door. Instead of being able to fire that round in the chamber that you would be able to with a normal pistol, you're now holding a heavy paperweight.

Additionally, I suspect many manufacturers wouldn't bother to modify their time-tested design simply to sell guns in California.

It makes the trigger more complex, which means it isn't as "crisp" or however you'd describe really good trigger action.

It also means you can't fire a semi-auto without the magazine, which could be a problem if your magazine is broken, or you are changing magazines and need to fire in the meantime.

I assume these take effect January 1st 2006 and January 1st 2007 :rolleyes

I turn 21 on the 17th of April 2006, so I guess my first purchase will have a LCI. Meanwhile, I have an entire year to give my dad a lot of money for pistols :teeth I guess I'll have to decide on three or four and get 'em before then.

So...which three or four? :laughing

Well, we eliminated all their natural predators. They are over running the area...better shoot them like that than with a .22 and they bleed to death.

Those probably were .22's - .22-250, .223, or some of the super short magnums.

I don't now. . .that last clip looked like they were shooting them with .30 magnums. Seem like a waste of an expensive round to me.

Hmmmm... I do have a couple hundred rounds I want to spend in the old Mauser. Maybe.
