California Assault Weapon Registration

Dont know if this is true but I saw an item about the DOJ requiring anyone who registers an "assault weapon" to provide very specific info on the purchase. This is problematic for someone who bought a rifle more than 20 years ago. I know such a person and know that the gun store is not longer even there. In fact, he can't remember the name of said gun store. So is this a way for DOJ to do a back door confiscation? Not sure this is set in stone, since the regs are still being debated. I know I have a shotgun bought by my dad at a Colorade gun store in the 50s, and there is no way in hell I have a receipt for it.

Oh California, turning law abiding citizens into felons.

If someone bought an "assault weapon" more than 20 years ago and they are looking to register it now, they have bigger problems than remembering the name of the place they purchased it.

But you are correct, there are a few stories on Calguns of guys being denied registration because they couldn't remember the exact day they took possession of the firearm.

How do I keep up with all the rule changes? They never sent me a notice....?

The secret is that nobody can, law enforcement, gun shops, citizens, etc. I follow it daily and I still have to refer to documentation to tell what is legal and what isn't.

Even if you do follow it, the language of the laws is pretty poor and difficult to interpret.

Splain, please?

There was a registration period for "assault weapons" prior to the last California ban at the turn of the century I believe. After that, the bullet button was developed in order to comply with the ban of weapons with detachable magazines. These weapons with detachable magazines became known as registered assault weapons or RAW. There was a lot of speculation that this new ban of weapons with bullet buttons would essentially reopen the old registration and the bullet buttons could be removed. However, the state was specific in that this new ban covered bullet buttons (BB) and that the registered weapons had to remain the their BB configuration. So now we have RAW the original, and RAW 2.0.

"...if your rifle does not have a non-detachable magazine..." How is that confusing? LOL. Hey they are lawyers not English majors, what do you expect?

Not a Mini-14

Correct, a mini-14 didn't need to be registered then, nor does it need to be registered this go-round either. It's featureless so it's exempt.

Really? Didn't think the regs were finalized. Do you have a link to them?

They have been final since early August.

I do not have a link to the regs, but they are on the DOJ website. If you are looking for information Calguns has a really nice write up that's describes the law, its history and the process for registration. Two things you will notice in their description is, it's long and the registration deadline was extended till July 2018. Other than that find a comfortable place to sit, click the link below and start reading.

The only real assault military rifle I own is a 1944 Modine Nagant. It also has an assault bayonet.

Is it possible to register now?

Is it true that you have to upload a bunch of pictures of the gun as well?

If I have a few AR lowers, can I take pictures with the same 22LR upper for all of the registrations?

I gotta get on Calguns and read about the reg. Honestly, it's all pretty confusing if you're not constantly in the loop. I'm sure plenty of people who have guns tucked away in their safes aren't aware of the legislation.

This is ridiculous.

It was never a requirement to remember or maintain documentation of the DROS.
