Does Money Make You Mean?

Ok. So tools are the problem.

i wasn't complaining about farms or money that was kevin.

if you want to blame overpopulation, then blame people's desire to expand and evolve, and inability to curb this desire.

it's something innate in us and every animal on this planet. we want to reproduce and live as long as possible and since we are the smartest species on this planet, have been the most successful at expanding our footprint.

if you got rid of agriculture and money i have a feeling we would still have found some way to grow.

Much more along these lines

Whether people work hard for money ( or not) is of little issue. I have a fundamental philosophical issue with money as a concept

So what you're saying, is that you'd rather be in like an Amish community situation then?

The Amish Mafia guy (Levi), seems to do pretty well for himself. Running over apple carts and shit when they show him disrespect.

Ok who the hell is that? The words Amish and Mafia are two that I'd never see go together.

It is a weakass TV show that I can't believe is still on. I watched it once or twice, some people believe it's true, but I don't. They did run over an apple cart because some guy was opertaing on their turf. It sort of cracked me up.

Sort of like the Bloods-Crips/Surenos-Nortenos thing in Pennsylvania.

Dual income = $150k 'ish, and suggests we're both right (would make me mean that it requires a permanent life-partner to afford a house)

San Francisco $79,624 median income, Fremont $101,535 median income, Oakland $52,583 median income

Those are numbers from US Census data, knock yourselves out:
http://www.census.gov/topics/income.html
to find data you go here:
http://factfinder.census.gov/faces/nav/jsf/pages/index.xhtml###

The data i posted was 2013, so not adjusted. I had the same thought. # seemed low for a "Household" income, which would include dual income. :dunno

EDIT: Your site says median "Household" income for Berkeley City, Ca is only $63,312

Wasn't meant to be an attack. Sorry. Just responded to the thought. This is an older (2010) article, but still interesting...

Birth rate in the United States in 2010, by family income

According to data published by the U.S. Census Bureau, fertility was higher among women with lower household incomes in 2010. Fertility was highest among women with household income under 10,000 U.S. dollars annually. It was lowest, at 54.80 births per 1,000 women, for women with household incomes over 75,000 U.S. dollars annually.

Kind of a silly question; how can having money make you meaner vs having no money, not enough money or tons of debt?

Seems like having money would be the less stressful experience.

Certainly has been the case for me.

Oh so it's like the equivilant of that absurd Devils Ride show then.

A "reality" show about a 1%er M/C that allows cameras in church? Produced by the guy who was the older brother on The Wonder Years. Suuuuuure, seems legit.

Personally I think it comes down to Douglas Adams' SEP field. Money can be an SEP field generator, especially if you've always had it. Human nature to avoid or ignore things that don't impact you or make you uncomfortable. Bet $100 you don't go check out every car alarm you hear.

FWIW, I doubt millionaires in the Bay Area feel rich. Hopefully, aware that they're firmly in the first-world problems camp, but they won't be retiring or buying a Ferrari. It's most likely all on paper, in a house or 401k, not in a giant pile like Scrooge McDuck. And if you run a retirement calculator that accounts for inflation, you'll probably find you'll need to work forever, or have at least a million or two to maintain your current standard of living in retirement. Or leave the US and live like a king in SE Asia.

We probably shouldn't have

If that is truly your position, I respect that and have no grand argument for it. I personally believe we have a greater responsibility to realize our own genetic potential, but your position, whose argument is relatively obvious once the position is stated, seems to me to be logically sound and unsentimental.

Hell, I thought I was a guy that craved for the more primitive values of old. Good lord, man, you have me beat there. Good for you.

Kind of makes me want to build/sell AR15 pistol grips made out of money...

thing is, money has all the built up cachet of what we know it can be.

If you make an overall generalization about it, I would take it back to a very simple thing.

Carrying a piece of silver was a lot easier than a 50lb sack of flour you had earned by the sweat of your brow It didn't get caught in the rain, or get eaten by rats or spoil from mold whatever. There is nothing inherently evil about that.

I guess minting money is the ultimate Pandora's box but it enhanced life, harmonized all kinds of economic activity and stabilized peoples fortunes.

It's hard to hate given those humble origins. I understand its become so much more. But it wasn't invented just to dominate, but to address a very basic need.

I fear that Kevin may end up living out in the woods somewhere in a "off the grid" shotgun shack writing his manifesto. Oh wait, that's already been done.

I'm going home to spray some more Monsanto products.
