C'mon now, it was only :37 needed by the Packers. And there's maybe one QB in the league who could've made that first pass to Davante Adams, and that was Rodgers. The ball literally cleared Fred Warner's hands by a football width. The 49ers played that prevent zone and covered the sidelines so there were holes to be had in the middle of the field. Rodgers knew what he had an exploited it. The 49ers would've won that game against any other team.
Until I turned on the radio this morning, I was cool with the game because I know a master QB picked apart a devastated secondary. The Niners are basically about a 10 and 6 team but not without filling those vacancies. They made a very strong comeback in that game but failed in the very end because they don't have two starting cornerbacks.
I can see what's wrong with the Niners: they're devastated of secondary players and running backs. Shanahan's plodding win-by-attrition scheme requires better RB gains that he got yesterday. Literally, two or three yards per carry more would have changed that game but they were getting stuffed.
And this cuts to the core of my belief about the team: Shanahan doesn't have a high-scoring, big-play mentality. He has an ultimate balance scheme that wins in a mostly unexciting way unless he gets very lucky with his chosen players. He is the master of the 17-24 ranging final score game. He can't get in a home run derby, he has to have a strong defense. He doesnt need Mahomes to run his scheme though of course it would be great.
He is also very cautious and I think it hurt him a bit yesterday.
I understand why he didn't play Lance more, because they were BEHIND for most of the game. He ain't Riverboat Ron whatsoever. I think Shanahan has a very buttoned-up tight concept of conditions which sacrifices spontaneous gains for a reliable, clock-eating march down the field. I think he'd love to have a better long-ball from Garoppalo but he is too calculating and experienced to just assume Lance is going to go out there and tear it up. More likely, he probably thinks he'll get an uneven performance. Clowns on the radio expect him to throw Lance to the Seahawks next week. If he didn't give him much first play in the first two games, why would he do that against Seattle? Mind you, I am not sure how good Seattle is right now at defense (haven't seen em play this year).
Jimmy G played better than I expected making huge third down plays that I was positive would fail as they approached the Red Zone. The radio guys are super down on on Jimmy but what I saw was a burned secondary, low yield RB play (we are spoiled on Mostert). Outstanding play by Deebo, Kittle was Kittle and Aiyuk was moderately successful, making a spectacular catch but missing a few others. Sure, I wish Jimmy was better but I don't pin that loss on him and frankly Aaron Rodgers is just a master of his craft right now. He has been lucky enough, like Brady, and Wilson, to make it through all of these games and still have a functioning body to execute what he can see with his eyes and brain.
They were even complaining about the D line yesterday for not enough pressure. I don't think most QBs could have stayed as cool as Rodgers so I think they provide adequate pressure to win most games henceforth. I love the Niners D. They have continued through the last years being on their own page of expectation even while the offense faltered. They are really proud, hard-hitters. Whether DeMeco has their respect as much as Saleh, I dunno, but I like our guys. I think Bosa is just getting warmed up frankly and I expect some star play from him as the season progresses.
