PGA going downhill?

He's actually gotten a lot better! :laughing

Oh wow he definitely has. Pretty sure he had Hank Haney make it his mission to fix that awful hitch he had.

Nine holes is enough for me.
I don’t watch it but it is impressive to see guys making incredibly long putts that look like same odds as a lottery win.

Welp, after the first weekend, I feel the PGA's product is superior. The ball is in LIV's court as to whether they tweak or make changes. Looking forward to the Portland event. Not sure if it's been mentioned: they are going to play the same course that the Korn Ferry tour hits, when they play in the Pacific Northwest. Will be fun to compare results from past tournaments. My feeling, so far, is that a tournament is a tournament. LIV hasn't done anything that makes it special or individual. My gut is that they have a chance at managing the international field and the PGA will cement themselves as the USA tour. Time will tell.

James, I enjoy seeing your passion for the sport of Golf. :thumbup

My passion for Track is part of what makes life interesting, I have friends who have had that passion for decades and I respect it for both my sport(s) and other sports.

What is life without any passions?

I can't help but wonder how threatened PGA (Jay) needs to be before they force courses to sign exclusivity agreements ala Ticketmaster/LiveNation and fuck it all up.

I don't talk much, but once I get started on golf, motorcycles, and paragliding there is no stopping me :laughing

That's an interesting weapon he has. I am guessing there is a natural balance that exists. If enough of the highest level of golfers switch to LIV then the course situation may come to light. But I think there is enough volume of courses to schedule for all the tours. The top 200 golfers require a specific course. The 5 tournaments LIV plans to play in the USA shouldn't have an effect. Cities and courses care more about the revenue over who is bringing it in. A couple exceptions would be Augusta, Pebble, Sawgrass, etc. I think there is plenty of real estate at this point.

edit - At this point, LIV is handling it's own ticket distribution. Easy to purchase tickets direct and there are no additional fees. That's a positive for them.

We're getting a TipsyPutt in Monterey! :party

I think it's going to be on Cannery Row in the old Blue Fin location. CORRECTION: Next to the old Blue Fin, in the vacated Cannery Row Brewing Co.

Update: I bitched out on going to the tournament. The reality is that I don't get enough hours away from the family to watch. Instead, I booked a tee time at a course on my list.

Nothing against the LIV.

I have a bit for Climber and will add it when I have time.

Doing is better than watching, it is cool you are doing what you want to do.

3rd weekend starting today. A handful of new signings. Getting Barkley involved is interesting. They haven't even agreed to anything, but he is participating in events. The overall approach is less competition and more celebration of golf. That's the feeling I get anyways. I mean, the big guns already have been paid. Now, it's just hang out with friends and travel.

I still believe if it wasn't for the anti-response, it probably would have less of an effect/presence. But, in the mean time, getting ready to turn it on this afternoon and watch. We cut the cord on TV and have been unable to keep up with the PGA. LIV has given me a chance to watch some golf again.

edit - Barkley has declined. Enjoyed the story as it developed. IMO, that decision demonstrates his business acumen.

Suddenly...PGA Tour has found the money.

PGA announces significant increase to purse of eight events, revamps schedule in response to LIV Golf

https://ftw.usatoday.com/2022/06/pga-tour-commissioner-jay-monahan-increase-purse-memo-schedule-liv

Key among the changes outlined in the memo from commissioner Jay Monahan are significantly increased purse sizes for eight different Tour events in 2023. The combined extra purse money is about $54 million more than in 2022, or an average of more than $6.7 million more over the eight events, which includes $5 million more at The Players Championship, FedEx St. Jude Championship and BMW Championship.

This comes as the USGA increased the purse of this year’s U.S. Open by $5 million to a record $17.5 million, a number now smaller than all but one of these events. According to the memo, the increases will be funded by sponsor support and supplemented in the short term by the operating reserve.

Yeah but when it was mentioned that Tiger was offered 700-800M and he turned it down... the PGA ain't flashing that much coin.

One has nothing to do with the other.

Tiger turned it down on moral grounds plus it secures his legacy. He's already got the money.

PGA Tour just asked sponsors to pay more and they have some savings to help increase the tournament pay. PGA Tour never pays for Tiger's bills, his sponsorship dollars do. However, those down in the mid-pack and below hustling to make the cut, those guys are looking for higher pay checks.

If you are decent player only making $500k-$2mil/year BEFORE expenses and LIV says come on over for $10mil-30mil, you jump ship.

Or if you are like Mickeltits and have gambling debts, well....we know why he jumped to LIV.

LOL 7 whole pages on Golf in a bike forum. :wow
As a kid, in the UK, I wrote it off as something old-farts did, when they couldn't play rugby, soccer or squash anymore. Those of us who could - did, them that couldn't - golfed :rofl

Looks like my daughter's entire generation came to the same conclusion. It was a boomer thing. :afm199 Its going the same way as the cruising industry and will be gone in a generation.

I sure hope not. The cruiser side is hands down the most financially secure segment of the riding population.

This is, like, entirely false :laughing

...you do realize Golf is / was the fastest growing sport over the last few years, with new membership / new club sales / etc skyrocketing over 100%?

Add in the LIV tour, add in golf influencers, comedians, models, etc on instagram / tik tok / whatever and it's been a flood that hasn't shown any signs of slowing down.
