When guns become a fetish.

Well guys, maybe she just doesn't want to.

Plenty of people feel that way about motorcycles, religions, different sexual orientations, dogs, pretty much everything. My wife is deathly afraid of guns. She won't hold one, and I'm not going to push her, tell her how much fun she missing, because it just isn't her thing. Kind of like snakes.

I know what the OP means about some people get this gun fetish thing going. Maybe not fetish, but obsession. Guns are tools. They aren't the key to most people happiness. There are a few people here that are completely obsessed. Now you're trying to convince someone that isn't in to it, that they need to be into it. It probably is t going to work. When, not if, the state or the Feds start clamping (the fervor is running pretty high, and the lefties seem to be getting out the vote more than the righties), are you going to leave the state or country?

To my knowledge, Daks has so far ignored invites from at least 5 people in various threads who have offered to take her shooting in a fairly polite manner - certainly far more polite than her posts have been on the subject. I do not believe she has any interest in educating herself or being more open minded about guns.

Prove me wrong Daks. We've agreed on other topics in other threads and if you get along with Hooli you can't be all that bad :laughing I'll reiterate my offer here and I'm pretty sure most of the BARF militia agree when we say we'd be happy to take you shooting and politely inform and instruct you on the proper safe usage of firearms. Between us we have everything from little pew to big bang for you to shoot :teeth.

3 things that are guaranteed to get a BARFer's motor running - race gas, gun smoke, and the right perfume/cologne :thumbup

I gotta admit though - every time I see Daks post something about guns, my face mimics my avatar.

Maybe she is just attention-whoring/trolling? Some people like to post for responses, maybe she doesn't get called out on it as much because she doesn't post often, and because she has :boobies.

That's fine and all, but it seems like common sense dictates that if you know nothing about a subject, you keep quiet rather than yelling (posting) loudly.

I USE BARF TO PROMINENTLY DISPLAY MY UNINFORMED BIASES :teeth

Fair enough, but think of it this way - how often are you annoyed by the ones who not only disagree with your views on something but continually insult you and generalize/marginalize your opinion on it in a public space? It's like being in line at a restaurant and some old woman sees your helmet and walks up and starts lecturing you on how dangerous motorcycles are and how you're compensating for a small penis and how many people she's seen die in motorcycle accidents. Bad enough when it happens once, and you grit your teeth, maybe offer a counter point, and wait for her to go away. Now imagine running into the same woman walking around spewing the same lecture at the race track, group rides, when you're working on your bike in your driveway, and to everyone in hearing range every time you're doing something remotely related to your bike.

That's Daks, except she does it with gun threads on BARF. And instead of being a random woman at a restaurant, it's more like your coworker/friend from school that you otherwise get along with except when she starts blathering on about how dangerous motorcycles are.

You knew, I grew up around at least a couple of people who, no lie, had enough guns to take over a small Latin American nation.

Some pretty sweet NFA toys, too.

None of them worry me. The 17 year old down the street trying to prove himself is what should worry you.

Pete, that's fine. But if she doesn't want to do it, she doesn't want to do it. Just like the anti bike people, her mind is made up. Obviously, someone very persuasive in her life has told her we've all got small dicks, that's why we have motorcycles and guns. Same with the extreme religious people, the anti gay people and the Ninja 250 people. Ain't gonna convince any of them they're wrong.

I understand her mind is made up. But as long as she continues to give her uninformed and misguided opinions I'll continue offering to take her shooting :)

I'll chime in with my often repeated gun experiences and how BARF changed my mind.

Prior to BARF I was against guns due to a personal experience in which one of my family members was able to purchase a gun even though they had extensive psychiatric history-adolescent hospital programs and eventually Pilgrim State locked psych ward.
Bought a gun and killed himself with it.
Fast forward to @ 10 years ago...........
Discussing my feelings about guns and wouldn't you know some BARFers invited me to look at, touch and explore their guns.
First time was very, very difficult.
Second time I went to a range with them, third time+ I've been shooting all kinds of guns in a variety of settings.
I am more comfortable around guns. I have had what one might call a corrective experience regarding guns due to certain BARFers. I no longer believe that it was the bad, evil gun that killed him but instead understand that it was he who committed suicide (3rd attempt btw)

So as the world turns so do our mindsets when open to the possibility of gaining insight.

Thanks again BARF.

Love,
Melissa

Guns = Dicks

They advertise larger magazines and assault rifles as masculine and mention "man cards" and strength and power.

Feeds into the average male ego pretty easily.

Every time I see someone argue about their "right" to own something that can kill 200 people in a few minutes I just think "Oh man, sorry about the tiny penis."

Not that this has to do with this news story, but I also don't think a "gun fetish" has anything to do with it.
I haven't read what our more tolerant Barfers have said to this, but I bet it's informative and generous.

You're about on the same level as "small penis" people you seem to look down on.

I often wonder if guns weren't fun, If they'd still be fought for so hard.

Like pretty much no one cares at all about the NSA stuff And encroaching on our fourth amendment rights, or how they target journalists and 1st amendment rights. But those don't have a fun thing attachted to them.

Any mention at all of restricting certain guns, which happen to be the most fun, and people go nuts. Hear s story about how the NSA uses cell phones apps to spy on us and bypass phone carriers, and we could care less.

even tho its the restricting of THOSE rights, which are far more taking away freedoms than the 2A.

and for the new antarius' law

I, and my family, are alive today because I took a gun somewhere it was strictly forbidden - gun free zone or a victim harvest zone if you see it like I do.

I was the victim of stern anti gun rhetoric as a yout, but one day I climbed above the hyperbola and horse crap and investigated the situation for myself, and I came away with the understanding that a firearm is a tool, nothing more. This tool threatens authoritative types, those that would be tyrants in political or personal life, and to my mind a ringing endorsement FOR them.

I was asleep in my camper in the middle of nowhere @ 2:30a when two thugs broke our campsite and my pregnant wife alerted me (woke me up).

I handed her a pistol, grabbed mine and exited the camper.

Bad guys still in their truck, one said, "hahaha, watch this!" I then took cover in full view of them, leveled the pistol at the driver and kept moving should they show further bad decision making and engage me.

They were silent for a few moments, the I heard the same one say, "I think we better leave now."

And so they did.

When I told my anti gun family about the 1.) neutralize the male 2.) rape the female 3.) kill the witnesses situation we had just survived, they told me I should not have had the gun.

Wh...WHAT?! Are you nutz?! Would you have felt better about yourself if we had let ourselves be murdered?

Got, "you shouldn't have had the gun" again.

Circular argument ensued with no reality to anchor the anti position.

So, I know what a gun is and does, why they are good, as does my family. I teach people to use them and cast bullets and reload and I make no apologies to anyone that thinks otherwise. If you don't like guns, don't get one, but woe be unto you to prevent me from having one - them's fighting words.
